Now the council want to kick me out of my home on to the streets.
I am a heavy smoker and work in a environment where I should be allowed. Instead I have to walk sometime a great distance. This is seen by a lot of people and is why I cannot keep a job. My work in engineering is always top standard and I am being forced into expressing my feelings. When I use the word scab its just a word and I respect every man or woman who had one day off work for the struggle I am now writing about.

We had been on strike for about 3 months and I was stood in front of the mirror looking at my hair, which was getting a bit long and looked messy. My mother usually cuts my hair but she lived about 9 miles away. So can you remember the hair cutter, trimmer and shaver all in one? It was a silver plastic square about 2 and a half inch’s and quite thin.

Well we had one and I began to trim my hair! A little bit off here and a little bit off there it looked fine. Until I twisted my head and looked at my profile. Arrrr I screamed good job no one was in the house I had shaved a bald patch in the middle of my hair. My hair still is always smart, what am I going to do? I was panicking as it was a Thursday and tonight was the Townville club disco (lots of birds to entertain and dance with, oh and they paid for most of the beer as I was a striking miner. I did respect everyone for that). So I thought shave it all off become a scin head !

No! Then the idea came in my head and I was off to my fathers as he lived about a quarter of a mile away. I had a key and let myself in my father was in bed. So I shouted up to him “dad where is your flat cap”. Under the coffee table came the answer from upstairs. That was it everywhere I went that flat cap never came off my head in public.

Even one day we were picketing in Lancashire at a pit called Agecroft! This pit had a belt
coming out of the side of it and it went straight to a near by power station. It was red hot and we were in the middle of the pickets when the first of many came out “SCAB”. With hearing this the pushing started and I was nose to nose with the police. Shit the pushing got intense and the police were growing in numbers I was struggling to breath. Oh hurry up and come in (I thought) the scabs I ment, my face must have been turning blue as I seriously was not breathing.

Then I felt a pair of hands on my head and then under me arms and that was it. I could breath, I was being pulled over the top of the pushing police by another police man. I did not know weather to kiss him as I stood there then I noticed my flat cap on the floor. Which I hastily grabbed and put straight back on my head (did not want anyone to see I had made a mess of my beloved hair). Ran around the back and started pushing again! it was all in the game. The flat cap stopped on for about 3 weeks until my mam cut it back into style. To this day there were only a few people knew about that!!

What about the time we went on a picket at a Doncaster pit and as we were near the pit gates waiting for the scabs to come in, the police came! not to us but to our parked cars. Which they then began to smash the windows and lights. We were walking back to the car for something and we saw this happening so straight away we jumped into our car and sped off to be stopped by the police about half a mile down the road, who told us to turn back (yes they were sending us back to the colliery) in which our driver might have told him to pi-s off and started driving good job the copper got out of the way or we could have been up for murder (or a cleaning bill for the tier rubber off his uniform) because there was no way we were going back.

10 cars were insurance right off’s but not one person got any money, the insurance company’s would not pay (yes you guest it the people who will take your premiums) as we were not supposed to be there (money for nothing and your chicks for free). Well if you spell the name of the car wrong the insurance companies won’t pay you out. I’m sure everyone who reads this has been there.

When we asked for the media and the news papers papers to come and take some photo’s and report on it, once again not one came apart from one the socialist w-rkers party (who I am sure they must still have the pictures). But there distribution was very small so again the public did not get the full picture of what was going on. A lot of money must have been paid for the media to keep away.

Why do we let the governments get away with this. Some of the cars smashed were the pickets personal pride and joy! Again the media people ought to come out and tell us how much money they were paid not to report (to turn a blind eye)? These are a
