Well I don’t know …
Well I don’t know about that. There really are only a handful of classic buttercream recipes. The just butter w/sugar “recipe” is typical in the U.S., whereas meringue-based originated in Europe. It takes more work & skill to make but the results are well worth it in my opinion, and I get compliments when I do. It’s lighter and silkier but still rich & buttery. Any baker who calls themself a “professional” should only use meringue recipe. Butter & sugar is for the novice!

There are as many …
There are as many frosting and icing recipes out there as there are bakers! The confectioners’ sugar and butter-based buttercream recipe is what I grew up making - my aunt was a professional cake decorator, and that recipe is what she would normally use. If a cake had to stand for a day or two, she’s make a meringue-based buttercream so it wouldn’t droop over time. She’d use yet another recipe if the weather was very hot or humid. So many frostings, so little time!

That’s not butter cream frosting, that’s just butter w/sugar. Blech! True frosting is meringue based.
