Compound modifiers …
Compound modifiers can be one word, two words, or a hyphenated word. The hyphenated words tend to be made from phrasal verbs or new words (especially slang).
Good examples:
handmade (adj.)
hands-on (adj.)
hand-me-down (noun) = from phrasal verb “hand down”
wanna-be (noun, slang)
I may do a lesson on this in the future. It’s an interesting topic.

I don’t know all …
I don’t know all the rules of word formation. As you can see, compound modifiers make use of hyphens. (Especially if someone creates their own adjective: a tomato-and-cheese sandwich.) But remember that nouns can often become noun modifiers. “Steamboat” is a noun, but we can talk about a “steamboat pilot”.

Compound words are …
Compound words are tricky even for native speakers. I often have to look in the dictionary to see if I wrote a word correctly!
Remember there are compound nouns and compound adjectives (modifiers).
Examples of compound nouns: cookbook, bookcase, tea bag, greenhouse, run-in. Examples of compound adjectives: green-eyed, three-legged, five-year-old, run-of-the-mill.
