Yes it's very inapprapropriate. The reason I say this, is because not all women have children. Basicly, your assuming all women, at a older age are Mothers. I think you should realize. That some women, have gone through the heartbreaks of miscarriages. Some women had their babies die at a young age. Can you imagine saying that to a older woman. Then seeing her cry in front of you.

I also agree with no; for one, you don't know them, and two, they might not be a mother, or they COULD be one, whose kids passed away, and she could be very sensitive about that.

Well, no — what if she'd never had children? Or if her children had died, she might feel awful if someone said that to her.

Absolutely not.
However, wishing someone to have a lovely spring day would be just fine.

Good question. People in the stores today wished me a Happy Mother's day. Assuming because I am a senior I'm also a mother?

No, because you don't know if she is a mother. What if she was unable to conceive, and, because technology wasn't what it is today, she never had kids, and her husband left her? (Doesn't necessarily mean it had to do with HER biologically. Maybe the husband actually had a low sperm count.)
