2-part question
1. happy mothers day! What are YOU doing for the occasion?
2. Why do players AVOID getting hit by pitches? Why dont they just take the base?
I will take my wife, the Mother of my children out to dinner. When my Mother was still living if the Cardinals had a home game that day i would take her to the game. She was the biggest Cardinal fan you would ever meet.
Most player try to avoid getting hit by a pitch to avoid injury and missing playing time and possable time on the DL. Also it hurts to get hit by a 90 mph fastball.

1. Playing my baseball game in her honor wearing a pink wristband and probably going out for dinner
2. Well, since I am a player, I can give my opinions. First of all, it really HURTS! And 2, most guys want to make sure they give an effort to avoid being hit so the pitcher doesnt throw a fit that they didnt make an attempt. Also, sometimes the pitch is impossible to avoid

well i got my mother an $80 gift card to a spa so she'll enjoy that
thanks for asking
if they dont make an attempt to get out of the way of a ball comign near them they dont get the base becuase they didnt make a effort
also because being hit everytime isnt fun and they would probably rather get a hit then take a ball to the back or elbow/ shoulder

1. Probably taking my mom out to eat later if it clears up. I made her breakfast this morning!
2. Depending on where it's thrown I can see why they'd avoid it. You never know when it could clip and elbow or a wrist and risk injury that could have you out for a while. Other players just don't care and are glad to take one for the team. Craig Biggio, Jason Kendall just to name a couple.

1. I'm hitting a homer for her.
2. I avoid getting hit because I wanna bat. It doesn't even hurt that bad, and if it's a situation where my team really needs base-runners, the bases are loaded, or maybe I have 2 strikes on me, I will wear the ball and take my base. Normally you are supposed to wear it all the time, but I'm sure a coach would rather see a double than a HBP. Normally it is also accepted to avoid getting hit in the head, neck, or feet.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mommies in the baseball section!!!!
1. We are having a BBQ today.
2. Probably to avoid getting hurt. Also, it might just be a natural reaction. If you see something coming towards you, you are going to try and get out of the way.

Just hanging out with Mom today.
I think avoiding getting hit is a natural reaction to something being hurled at you. Besides, you never know how much damage being hit could cause. It's not worth going on the DL to get on base.

1. Giving her a call.
2a. It hurts!
2b. If the batter does not attempt to get out of the way, or if the pitch is in the strike zone, the batter is not entitled to advance to first base. (see rule 6.08)

1) Taking mom out for dinner.
2) They don't want to get hit by a 90 mph baseball. Not on the toe, not on the elbow, not in the eye…no where. They can't take a base if they're being called out on a stretcher. Or put out for 3 months on the DL

1) My mom is deceased, but I took flowers to her grave this morning.
2) There is a rule (though not often enforced) that a hitter has to make some kind of attempt to avoid being hit. The umpire has the option to not award first base if he feels such an effort was not made.

Reported for chatting. Let's not kid ourselves. This is NOT A MESSAGE BOARD or chat room.
It is against the rules for a batter not to attempt to avoid being hit by a pitch. The penalty is he must continue batting.
